CHAMBER EXPERIMENTS AND RESEARCH IDEAS

Experiment Ideas has been established to provide science educators utilizing the GEN1000 plant growth chamber in BioSTEM schools, with a selection of experiments and research ideas to conduct with students in their classrooms along with tips, techniques and best practices to help ensure optimum results.

Basic Science Labs

A series of basic science labs have been presented here and these will continue to be added to over time. These labs are largely based on utilizing Wisconsin Fast Plants® seeds and supplies, which every school receives in a starter kit with their chamber to help make it easier to get their initial experiments underway. Fast Plant seeds have been specially developed over many years at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While these seeds can be substituted in some experiments, they feature a reduced 5-week lifecycle making them ideal for BioSTEM classroom experiments and research over shorter periods of semester time and are recommended for anchor usage.

However, there are literally hundreds of variations of experiments and research projects suitable for the GEN1000, utilizing a wide variety of organics, and limited only by the imaginations of both teachers and students.

While the seeds and supplies issued to BioSTEM schools also come with instructional booklets provided by Wisconsin Fast Plants®, additional guidelines related to effectively growing plants in the GEN1000 chamber for both class-set experiments as well as independent student driven research, are offered here as well. They have been compiled by science educators from BioSTEM schools who have worked with the GEN1000 chamber in the classroom.

Comment on the Experiments

Educators are encouraged to provide comments on their own experiences experimenting with the GEN1000 chamber in the classroom in this section, as well as on the Discussion Forum. This will allow others in the BioSTEM community to benefit from innovative ideas, shared tips and techniques, as well as best practices.

Submit Your Own Experiment

We also invite educators to contribute their own formal experiment and research labs to the community by clicking on the following link and completing a submission form. Your submission will be reviewed and considered to be added to the listings.

Class-Set Experiments

These science labs are presented in basic formats that are adaptable by teachers for class-set experiments. They allow teachers to modify elements based upon their botany backgrounds, as well as their specific classroom needs and education goals. Please click here.
